Heckscher-Ohlin Model with Assignment Problem with Skilled and Unskilled Labor

چکیده
In this work, I construct an extended model of the Heckscher-Ohlin model, in which there is an assignment problem of how to assign workers to two types of endowments, skilled and unskilled labor. In the comparative statics for a small open economy, when product prices change, the outputs change more than in the HeckscherOhlin model. In the comparative statics for a whole economy, when consumer tastes or production technologies change, the product prices change less than in the HeckscherOhlin model. Furthermore, a greater elasticity of substitution between endowments causes a greater extent of change in the outputs for a small open economy and a lesser extent of change in the product prices for a whole economy. These results explain why we see different kinds of relationships between wage changes and other economic changes. Applied Economics Workshop
This paper develops and evaluates a novel mechanism through which imports of unskilled intermediates (offshoring) increase wages of both skilled and unskilled workers by inducing skill-biased technology adoption and innovation in developed countries. Data for a panel of manufacturing industries in the United States over 1974-2005, strongly support the technology channel with a doubling of offsh...
متن کاملNew goods and the skill premium ☆
In a two-cone Heckscher–Ohlin model with CES preferences and a continuum of goods, new northern goods increase the northern skill premium if they are skilled-labor intensive, and may increase the premium if they are unskilled-labor intensive. Thus, the introduction of new goods into US technology could have done more to increase the US skill premium than a closed-economy model would predict. I ...
متن کاملImpacts of Import Tariff Cuts on the Iranian Labor Market Structure: a Computable General Equilibrium Model Approach
Most debates about the role of tariff cuts on the level of employment and rate of wages in labor market have come out of well-known Hecscher â Ohlin and Stopler â Samuelson (HOS) theorems. Considering the fact that we have divided the workforce into skilled and unskilled labors the present paper assesses the impacts of tariff cuts on labor market indicators in Iran. To address these issues...
متن کاملIV : skill development for better labor market outcomes
On the one hand, the Stolper-Samuelson (SS) corollary of the Heckscher-Ohlin theorem predicts that both trade and FDI should take advantage of the abundance of low-skilled labour in DCs and so imply an increasing demand for domestic low skilled labour and hence decreasing within-country wage dispersion and income inequality (Wood, 1994 and 1997; for a critical view, see Milanovic, 2002). On the...
متن کاملA Specific-factor Model of Offshoring
This paper presents a specific factor model of a small open economy to show the factor price effect and welfare effect of offshoring. Different to ambiguous wage effect conclusions of offshoring under Heckscher-Ohlin framework, the conclusions of this paper is clear-cut. Offshoring will benefit specific factor (skilled labour and land), hurts some non-specific factor (unskilled labour), and enl...
